DescriptionKorail 1000 Series Subway Train - Flickr - skinnylawyer (1).jpg
1974 saw the introduction of electric subway and commuter train to Seoul. The initial service, now Seoul Subway Line 1, consisted of a 6-mile underground track under downtown Seoul, with continuing service on through trains on three mainline routes out of Seoul, reaching Incheon and Suwon. The rolling stock was Korail 1000 Series and Seoul Metro 1000 Series, based on similar Japanese subway train designs of the day.
This is the interior of Car 1315, part of Consist 115, the first Korean-built subway train, built in 1977. It served Seoul Subway Line 1 until its time-mandated retirement in 2002. The interior's trimming, seat cushions, and even advertisements are more or less as they were at the time of retirement. Velour seats and colored interior panels have since been phased out in favor of more fire-resistant materials, after the 2003 Daegu Subway Fire tragedy. Air conditioning was not added until the 1990s.
