  • Copies of this photo are seen as part of:
  • Metronome's archive. The uploaded photo has no marks to indicate it was taken by the magazine.
  • Michael Ochs Archive which is Ochs' collection of music and music-related photos.
  • Neither of these have copyright information listed and both of them date the photo as circa 1955. The uploaded copy is dated March 30, 1952.
  • Jo Stafford moved to Columbia Records in 1950. Though the newspaper erroneously called her Doris Day, the song "Ay-Round The Corner" was done by Jo Stafford in 1952. Billboard February 23, 1952, page 43. To be certain that the photo was not under copyright, a search of artwork registrations was done for the years 1950, 1951, and 1952. This covered Jo Stafford's time at Columbia up to the point where the photo was published. There were no results for Columbia Records, Metronome or any photos of Jo Stafford for the mentioned time frame. There's no evidence to suggest that copyright was ever registered for the photo.
  • The photo has no copyright markings on it as can be seen in the links above.
  • United States Copyright Office page 2 "Visually Perceptible Copies The notice for visually perceptible copies should contain all three elements described below. They should appear together or in close proximity on the copies.
1 The symbol © (letter C in a circle); the word “Copyright”; or the abbreviation “Copr.”
2 The year of first publication. If the work is a derivative work or a compilation incorporating previously published material, the year date of first publication of the derivative work or compilation is sufficient. Examples of derivative works are translations or dramatizations; an example of a compilation is an anthology. The year may be omitted when a pictorial, graphic, or sculptural work, with accompanying textual matter, if any, is reproduced in or on greeting cards, postcards, stationery, jewelry, dolls, toys, or useful articles.
3 The name of the copyright owner, an abbreviation by which the name can be recognized, or a generally known alternative designation of owner.1 Example © 2007 Jane Doe.")
