Надпись с именем святителя не сохранилась, но иконография - черты его лика и форма бороды подсказывают, что это Иаков брат Божий, апостол из числа семидесяти, ставший первым епископом Иерусалима, который был сыном Иосифа от первого брака и, следовательно, приходился братом Иисусу Христу по плоти. В византийском искусстве изображается в числе чтимых отцов церкви. Как творец первой литургии, содержавшей заупокойные службы, и автор послания, в котором говорится об исцеляющей силе молитвы (Иак.5:14-16), он с древних времен почитался еще и в качестве целителя. День памяти - 23 октября, а также 4 января - в числе Семидесяти апостолов. В Новгороде ему молились об избавлении от эпидемий. (См.: Иконы Твери, Новгорода, Пскова XV- XVI вв. ЦМиАР. Известны новгородские иконы, на которых он изображен вместе с другими святыми: "Никола Чудотворец, Иаков брат Божий, Игнатий Богоносец" конца XV в. (ГРМ) и "Иаков брат Божий, Косма и Дамиан" второй четверти XVI в. По мастерству исполнения и художественным достоинствам икона является памятником столичного уровня. Она могла быть создана в лучших мастерских Москвы или Новгорода середины XVI в. Но особенности исполнения лика позволяют считать, что ее автором был новгородский иконописец. Икона является художественной, историко-культурной, научной и музейной ценностью
