Summary

Description

Map of the Hazel Creek valley in the Great Smoky Mountains of the U.S. state of North Carolina, showing various locations mentioned by author Horace Kephart in his 1913 book, Our Southern Highlanders. This map has been modified (mainly the addition of the locations in blue) from a detailed portion of a National Park Service map drawn in 1940, before the creation of Fontana Lake and while much of the valley was still in private hands. The locations in blue existed when Kephart was active in the area (1904-1907), but not necessarily in 1940. The Appalachian Trail, built with Kephart's suggestions, roughly follows the Tennessee-North Carolina border. Approximate coordinates for these locations:

Spencer cabin (N35.56357°, W83.73063°)
Hall cabin (N35.56624°, W83.64190°)
Siler's Meadow (N35.56401°, W83.56682°)
Medlin (N35.49465°, W83.68889°)
Kephart's cabin (N35.50813°, W83.70958°)
Proctor (N35.47382°, W83.72161°)

Bushnell (N35.43715°, W83.58521°)
Date 1940, modified (blue locations added) May 2009.
