Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen speaks with Medal of Honor recipient George Sakato Nov. 1, 2009, at the 65th anniversary of the Rescue of the Lost Battalion tribute dinner in Houston. In 1944, the 141st Infantry Regiment was surrounded by Nazi forces in the Vosges Mountains in northern France. After several failed attempts to reach the unit, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, battled for five days before breaking through the Nazi lines, reaching the lost battalion and rescuing 230 men. The 442nd Regimental Combat Team became the most decorated unit in U.S. military history and earned the nickname the Purple Heart Battalion.
