Gatwick Airport, south of London, is Britains' second busiest airport, after Heathrow. Until 2017 it was also the busiest single-runway airport in the world.
You may notice in my picture a second runway/taxiway. It can, under certain circumstances, be used as a runway but it's too close to the main runway to be permitted to be used at the same time.
In recent years the operators of the airport have been trying to get permission to expand the airport, with an additional runway, etc. However, in 2020/21 the airport (like others round the world) has seen its' traffic drastically reduced thanks to the Covid pandemic. The future is uncertain.
In my photo an aircraft has just taken off (and is still above the runway). It may just be visible in the photo.
