Flag Competition

In the "Anchorage Daily News", 1 September 2009, Zaz Hollander reports the launching of the flag contest as follows: "[...] A city-sponsored contest starting later this month asks local students to create a flag that captures the spirit of a city that's tried for years to define its own character. The idea is Mayor Verne Rupright's. Rupright says he hopes a flag will help drum up community pride in Wasilla. He figured children in the 1970s designed the city seal -- a cabin, a cache, a kayaker, all against a mountain backdrop -- so the city's current youth should get the chance to create a flag. [...] Wasilla's effort isn't the first time young people have been enlisted to create a standard. Alaska's instantly recognizable flag, with its "eight stars of gold on a field of blue" -- the Big Dipper and North Star against a blue background -- was designed in 1927 by John Ben "Benny" Benson, a 13-year-old seventh-grade orphan at a mission school in Seward. For Wasilla youngsters, city librarian KJ Martin offers some tips, courtesy of the North American Vexillological (it means the study of flags) Association: a flag should be distinctive, meaningful and simple. No government seals, because they're too complicated; the design should be easy to recognize at a distance. [...]" www.adn.com/news/alaska/matsu/story/919150.html Ivan Sache, 3 September 2009

Seal

Oddly enough, the Wasilla civic seal is to be found on the commercial Web Site of the company which designed and maintains the city's Records Management program. In a standard circular format the outer ring is white with the words 'Founded 1917' at the top; beneath the letter 'f' in 'Founded' and the numeral '7' in '1917' are two small black dots. At the bottom of the outer ring the words 'City of Wasilla . Alaska' are written. The center of the seal depicts a local landscape in full color, and very beautiful it looks, too! We have a city seal that was created at the time we were incorporated as a city in 1974 although Wasilla was founded in 1917. The seal was created by a student of a 5th grade class at a local elementary school through a contest. It depicts mountains in the background, which we can see from the distance and a lake, which we do have here in Wasilla. The cabin and the kayak are scenes from old-time Alaska. Kristie Smithers, City Clerk, 1 April 2004
