English translation

Rohonc Codex (Rohonci-kódex, also spelled Rohonczi Codex) [approx. 1830?] — Language not determined.

Paper. – 120x100 mm. – (224) folios.

Writing: unknown.

Ornaments: 57 ink drawings.

Binding: wallet-like leather binding in a semi-leather case.

Place of origin: Hungary (?)

Owner: It was taken to the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1838, from the Library of the Batthyány family in Rohonc.

Remarks: Probably a 19th c. hoax, on a paper from the beginning of the 16th c. The images suggest religious content (Old and New Testament). It was probably an attempt to forge an ancient Hungarian codex. – Attachments: A postcard by Bernhard Jülg sent from Innsbruck in 1885 to Pál Hunfalvy about his attempts to decipher the codex; 2 pieces of watermark-photos, with the age determination of the paper by Kálmán Némäti.

Edition: none.

Criticism

Ornaments. The codex contains 87 ink drawings, not 57 as affirmed above.

Remarks. Age determination of the paper was first done by János Jerney (1844), Némäti quotes a substantial part of this article in his work (1892) – including the age determination of the paper. So Jerney's research might have been attributed to Némäti.

Bibliography. Jerney's work is a thorough first attempt to describe the codex. It is worth mentioning.
