DescriptionDoomsday Book - Counties of England - 1086.png
Counties of England in the year 1086, as documented in the Doomsday Book, after the Norman Conquest. The northern counties of Cumberland, Westmorland and Northumberland had not yet been conquered and were then part of the Kingdom of Strathclyde, while the County Palatine of Durham was excluded because the Bishop of Durham had the exclusive right to tax it. The omission of other counties is not fully explained.
