Тема картины, задуманной художником в период тяжелой болезни, связана с эпохой гонений на христиан в годы правления императора Диоклетиана (284-305). Эффектный контраст багряного заката и холодных сине-зеленых струй воды с рефлексами от мистического света, излучаемого ликом мученицы, брошенной в Тибр со связанными руками, придает картине романтическое звучание. Современник Делароша, писатель Теофиль Готье, который назвал этот женский образ "христианской Офелией", особенно восхищался ее лицом "девственной чистоты и божественной красоты".
