English: Colonel Charles H. Graves. For his gallant conduct at Gettysburg he was commissioned full Lieutenant Colonel of Volunteers, and Colonel by brevet, in recognition of his services through the war. After the war ended Col. Graves served as Aide-de Camp to Gen. Terry, who commanded the Department of Virginia. In June, 1866, he entered the United States Army (Regulars) and was appointed First Lieutenant of the 14th Infantry. In June, 1867, he was promoted to Captain of the 34th Infantry, and subsequently, was appointed Major and Lieutenant Colonel of the Regular Army by brevet, for gallant and meritorious conduct. He served as Inspector General and Judge Advocate General in the Department of Dakota until 1869.

He was appointed Captain andAssistant Adjutant General of United States Volunteers in 1863, and assignedto the First Brigade, First Division, Third Army Corps. Later, he wastransferred to the Naval Brigade, Army of the James, on the staff of Gen.Graham. In 1864 he was transferred to the 10th Army Corps upon the staffof Gen. Birney, who commanded that corps as Inspector General and Aide-de-Camp. During the election riots in New York City in November, 1864, heserved there upon the staff of Gen. Joseph R. Hawley, with the rank ofInspector General. He accompanied Gen. Birney to Philadelphia on hislast illness, in November, 1864, and was then appointed Inspector Generaland Aide-de-Camp on the staff of Gen. Alfred H. Terry, who commandedthe 10th Army Corps.
