English: Image taken in the Maritime museum of Lisbon (september 2009).

Explanation by the Maritime museum of Lisbon about the Madre de Deus carrack ("nau" in portuguese):

"Built and rigged in Lisbon in 1589, sailed two times to India. She was captured while returning from the second voyage, in 1592, after having engaged three english ships, off the Ilha das Flores - Azores. The Madre de Deus was a nau of such dimensions that, after being captured, she was taken to Dartmouth, England, where she was kept on display for the public wonder and amazement."

Main characteristics, according to Lisbon maritime museum:

Burthen - 1600 tons Length - 50 meters (head to lantern) Beam - 14,37 meters (second closed deck) Load waterline - 9,39 meters Mainmast height - 36,6 meters Main yard length - 32 meters Bronze artillery 32 guns (several calibers) Persons on board - 600 to 700
