Captain John Dominis (1796–1846) came to America from Trieste (probably originally from Croatia) in 1819, made several historic voyages through the Pacific Northwest of America and across the Pacific. Then moved to Honolulu and built a historic house called "Washington Place", became a Prince of the Kingdom of Hawaii. The house was the governor's mansion from 1918 to 2001, and is a National Historic Landmark.
