Português: A obra seria, segundo a hipótese de Lievens-de Waegh, uma versão autógrafa (um estudo, ou uma versão recusada pelo pintor) anterior ao painel central do famoso tríptico de Bosch, no Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga de Lisboa, da qual existem cerca de 16 versões espalhadas por museus e coleções particulares. Para Lievens-de Waegh, a versões de São Paulo e da Filadélfia seriam estudos prévios para o painel central do tríptico, opinião endossada por Roberto Longhi e Ettore Camesasca. A literatura européia contemporânea tende a considerar as versões de São Paulo e da Fidadélfia como cópias antigas. Recentes estudos científicos realizados na versão paulista encontraram alguns pentimenti ("arrependimentos", desenhos esboçados mas encobertos na superfície da obra) semelhantes aos pentimenti do painel lisboeta. Esse fato sugere que, seja quem for o autor da obra, pertence ao círculo mais direto de Jheronimus Bosch e assistiu à execução do painel de Lisboa. O MASP mantém a atribuição a Bosch.
