English: Captain W.A. Bishop, V.C., Royal Flying Corps, who has up to this date shot down 37 German aircraft. William Avery "Billy" Bishop is in the cockpit of his Nieuport 17 fighter, 60th Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. The Nieuport's armament, a Lewis gun on a Foster mounting, is immediately above Bishop. At the time this photograph was taken in France in August, 1917, he had already shot down 37 German aircraft.

Capt William A. Bishop, VC, DSO, MC, in the cockpit of his Nieuport Scout, while with No 60 sqdn. According to the caption on the picture as held by the Imperial War Museum, it was taken on August 6, 1917, and "up to this date he has brought down 37 german aeroplanes."
