English: Arctic Tern (Sterna paradisaea), Ward of Clugan Large colonies of 'tirricks', as they are known in Shetland, were once a feature of the islands, but they have struggled to find sufficient food to raise chicks for most of the last 2 decades. More than usual are attempting to breed in 2009, including this bird, part of a colony of 40-50 pairs on the Ward of Clugan, but these numbers are still rather poor.
