English: Republic P-47D-22-RE Thunderbolts, including (2N-U, serial number 42-25904) nicknamed "Lethal Liz II", of the 50th Fighter Group, 81st Fighter Squadron, with cows at Carentan Airfiled (A-10), France, Summer 1944. (s/n 42-25904 (50th FG, 81st FS) lost Aug 17, 1944. MACR 8500. s/n 42-26063 (50th FG, 81st FS, *Jean*) interned in Switzerland Oct 15, 1944). The 50th FG with 81st FS and 313rd FS was based with P-47D at Giebelstadt airfield, south of Würzburg/Germany from 20 April 1945 to 21 May 1945. Also the 417th Night Fighter Squadron with Northrop P-61A/B Black Widows was based at Giebelstadt from 24 April to 21 May 1945.
Deutsch: Republic P-47D-22-RE Thunderbolts, vorne die '2N-U', s/n 42-25904 mit Spitznamen Lethal Liz II der 81st Fighter Squadron, 50th Fighter Group, abgestellt auf dem Flugplatz von Carentan Airfiled (A-10) in Frankreich, Sommer 1944. Die 50th FG mit ihrer 81st und 313rd FS (81. u. 313. Jagdstaffel) war der erste fliegende Verband der US Army Air Force (USAAF), der ab dem 20. April 1945 auf dem kurz zuvor von der US Army besetzten Flugplatz Giebelstadt, südl. Würzburg/Unterfranken stationiert war. Die Stationierung mit schätzungsweise 25-35 P-47D Thunderbolts, sowie mehreren Support Aircraft Douglas C-47 Skytrain (DC-3) und AT-6 Texan reichte über den Tag der Bedingungslosen Kapitulation der Wehrmacht (8. Mai 1945) hinaus bis zum 21. Mai 1945. Ausserdem waren nahezu zeitgleich die Nachtjäger der 417th Night Fighter Squadron mit ca. 15 Northrop P-61A/B Black Widows in Giebelstadt untergebracht, und zwar vom 24. April bis zum 21. Mai 1945.
