11 April 1981, during the
1981 Brixton riot in London, police with riot shields line up outside the Atlantic Pub, on the corner of Atlantic Road and
Coldharbour Lane,
Brixton. The photographer wrote: "In April 1981, around lunchtime, I stepped out of a shop in Brixton and a car burst into flames some 20 yards up the street, marking the start of the worst episode of civil disobedience Britain had seen in over 100 years. These are some of the pictures from that day."
"Police with riot shields block the access to the main area of rioting. Up to this point they'd been using dustbin lids, sheets of ply, anything they could lay their hands on for protection. These riot shields had only just arrived."
