The present painting commemorates the Amy Stockdale's safe return from a voyage to Sierra Leone under the
command of Captain Gates (see Lloyd's List's for 17th October 1838). For details on this ship see D. McGregor, Schooners in Four Centuries, p. 43, in which he illustrates a print of the ship dating from 1893.[1]
