DescriptionRuined church at Courcelette (4688010399).jpg
English: Destroyed church at Courcelette, France, 1916. The scene is one of destruction and obliteration. In the middle of a picture, which is dominated by mounds of building rubble, remain two damaged walls. The central one becomes the focus of the picture, and the other balances it on the right hand side.
Scenes such as this were commonly used as propaganda, intended to reaffirm resolve against the enemy. Courcelette is more properly Flers-Courcelette, and is on the Somme.
Original reads: 'The ruined church at Courcelette. A German sniper hid for two days in the tower after the town was captured.']
