English: Remediation of the former Union Carbide Australia Limited herbicide and pesticide plant at Rhodes, New South Wales. Taken looking East from Homebush Bay (suburb) across Homebush Bay, part of the Parramatta River. The barge at the foreshore is being used to carry contaminated sediment for remediation. Dioxins are the main chemical of concern in the bay. They were responsible for a total commercial fishing ban in Sydney Harbour for about 3 years, a commercial fin fishing ban west of the Gladesville Bridge for about 20 years and a total ban on fishing in Homebush Bay which remains in place after about 3 decades (as at 2009). The machinery in the background is a direct thermal desorber and thermal oxidiser - an incinerator. See
http://rhodesnsw.org for more information. The units on the right are on the former Union Carbide Glad factory and are on the southern side of Gauthorpe Street and western side of Marquet Street.
