English: Fifth section of the Hungry Ghosts Scroll located at the Kyoto National Museum. The scroll depicts the world of the hungry ghosts, one of the
six realms of Buddhism and contains tales of salvation of the hungry ghosts. This particular section
shows hungry ghosts suffering from not being able to drink water. Because of the compassion of the Buddha they are able to cast off their ghoulish bodies and to be born into the land of the Buddha. The picture employs a narrative technique in which the same figures appears at different times within the scene. The whole scroll has been designated as
National Treasure of Japan in the
category paintings. It was possibly part of a set of scrolls depicting the six realms which was kept at
Sanjūsangen-dō.
