Intended as a gift from Elizabeth, Duchess of Devonshire to Cardinal Consalvi in 1824. He died, then she died, and it was returned to George IV, who presented it to the 6th Duke of Devonshire.
Notes
Lawrence (and/or his studio) painted several copies of this portrait. The Royal Collection includes two versions with the king's right hand on his knee rather than at his chest.
