Object history
Deutsch: Schon das älteste, um 1400 geschnittene und seit 1439 in Abdrucken überlieferte Siegel des Ortes, der seit 1504 als Stadt bezeichnet wird und 1840 offiziell zur Stadt erhoben wurde, zeigt einen (linksgekehrten) Abtsstab zwischen zwei schräggekreuzten Knitteln. Als Wappen ist das Bild seit 1596 (Gadnerscher Atlas) bekannt und mit geringen Veränderungen bis heute beibehalten worden. Es ist mit den Knitteln (Knüppeln), die auch als Fleckenzeichen verwendet wurden, volksetymologisch „redend" für den Ortsnamen, während der Abtsstab auf das Kloster Maulbronn hinweist, das seit 1148 hier Besitz und seit dem 13. Jahrhundert die Ortsherrschaft innehatte. Die Flagge wurde am 9. November 1966 vom Innenministerium, das Wappen nach der Vereinigung von Knittlingen mit Freudenstein (1975) am 27. August 1976 vom Landratsamt Enzkreis neu verliehen. Schon 1972 war die Waldensersiedlung Kleinvillars nach Knittlingen eingemeindet worden.
