This painting had long been considered as a original work by Hieronymus Bosch by several experts, including De Tolnay. Contemporary literature tends to attribute it to a follower of Bosch from the 1st half of the 16th century, also influenced by the prints of Lucas van Leyden and Albrecht Dürer. There's a painting of the same subject formerly attributed to Bosch in a museum in Princeton.
