DescriptionAn island off the Florida Keys, this historic prison housed prisoners including Dr. Samuel Mudd (involved with the assassination of President Lincoln), and was a fort during the Civil War.jpg |
English: The Dry Tortugas was founded in the 1500's by Ponce de Leon and was named "Tortuga" due to the numerous sea "Turtles". In the 1600-1700's, the area was by pirates for attacks on ships.
A popular tourist destination, the surrounding waters are home to a local 12 foot crocodile and thousands of nesting sooty terns. |
