The Faculty of Engineering, University of Tokyo is one of the ten faculties at the University of Tokyo (UTokyo), responsible for undergraduate education and research. It operates in conjunction with its affiliated postgraduate school, the Graduate School of Engineering.

This article is about both the undergraduate faculty and the graduate school, as they jointly run integrated educational and research programmes.

Overview

The faculty and the graduate school are based at Hongo, the main campus of the university, but operate in close liaison with the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences at Kashiwa and the Institute of Industrial Science at Komaba. They also own research faculties outside the premises of these campuses, such as the experimental nuclear reactor Yayoi, located in Tokai, Ibaraki. ^[1]

The faculty has produced Japan's leading engineers since its inception as the Imperial College of Engineering in 1873. It has always been the country's most prestigious and selective educational and research institution of engineering. Numerous alumni have helped Japan's rapid post-war recovery and development, which is ascribed to its high-tech manufacturing industry, as engineers. The faculty is also renowned for its entrepreneurship, symbolised by the establishment of two of Japan's largest companies, Toyota Motor and Hitachi, by its alumni.
