Route description

US 395 Bus. begins at an intersection with China Lake Boulevard/Brown Road/US 395, south of Ridgecrest. The route continues north on China Lake Boulevard, passing southeast of Ridgecrest Heights and eventually reaching a junction with SR 178. After the junction, the route becomes concurrent with SR 178 before heading west on Inyokern Road. US 395 Bus. ends at an interchange with US 395.

U.S. Route 395 Bus. (corner of Las Flores Avenue and China Lake Boulevard, facing Maturango Museum)

For about 4.8 miles (7.7 km) north of the business route's southern terminus, the arterial is a two-lane undivided road with few businesses. Passing the route's intersection with College Heights Boulevard, businesses such as Albertsons become more frequent as the route turns from a generally northeast direction to a northward direction. The arterial also becomes a four-lane divided road. Before the intersection with Bowman Road, the city's only Walmart Supercenter can be viewed in sight, accessible via Bowman Road and a local road intersecting the route (northbound accessible only). Certain businesses around the supercenter such as Panda Express also line the road.

Before the route's junction with Ridgecrest Boulevard, the Ridgecrest City Hall is located west of the route on California Avenue, directly adjacent to the Kerr McGee Center, Freedom Park, and Ridgecrest Police Department. North of city hall, the route junctions with SR-178 (Ridgecrest Boulevard). Northeast of this junction is the Ridgecrest Plaza Shopping Center, consisting of businesses such as Dollar Tree, Denny's, Grocery Outlet, China Lake Buffet, and McDonald's along with other shops. Continuing north of Ridgecrest Boulevard, the route will now be concurrent with SR 178. The city's downtown shopping area, Balsam Street (between Ridgecrest Boulevard and Argus Avenue), is located parallel to US 395 Bus. Events such as A Night on Balsam are periodically hosted on this street which involves food, drinks, and music, along with other activities. Car traffic is blocked in the area where the event is hosted. [1]

Continuing north of the Ridgecrest Plaza Shopping Center, Petroglyph Park is located north of McDonald's. This 12-acre (4.9 ha) park has carved rocks, artwork, and a playground. North of this park lies the Maturango Museum and China Lake Museum on Las Flores Avenue. Maturango Museum provides visitors with information on Mojave Desert history along with petroglyph tours. [2] The China Lake Museum Foundation provides information on science, armament, and technology. [3]

For a brief period, the route remains desolate on both sides, surrounded by desert before reaching the Ridgecrest Town Center. This shopping center consists of businesses such as Stater Bros. Markets, Marshalls, Big 5 Sporting Goods, Papa Johns Pizza, Tokyo House Japanese, Krispy Donuts, Wingstop, and California Welcome Center – Ridgecrest. Continuing north, Ridgecrest Regional Hospital is located west of the business route. Many of the branches of the hospital are located close to or on the route. Before Ward Avenue, the route is home to a few hotels, many others located on local roads close to the artery. North of Ward Avenue, a barbecue restaurant, Casey's, is located on the route. Casa Corona, a Mexican restaurant, is also located close to Casey's. Both of these restaurants are local.

As the route turns left onto Inyokern Road, heading west alongside SR 178, two NAWS entry gateways can be accessed via the four-way intersection: Sandquist gate (north of China Lake Boulevard, becoming Sandquist Road) and another gate (east on Inyokern Road). [4] US 395 Bus. is now filled on one side with various businesses, the other side with no buildings. As the route continues west, leaving Ridgecrest, the road once again becomes nearly desolate with few to no businesses on both sides of the route. The route remains four-lane and divided.

When the route enters China Lake Acres, some businesses such as hotels and storage facilities appear. Exiting China Lake Acres, the interchange between US 395 Bus./SR 178 and US 395 is encountered, marking the end of the business route.
