David R. K. Adler (born, 1993) is a political economist and Co-General Coordinator of the Progressive International [1] from Los Angeles, California. [2] [3] [4] [5] His work focuses on a new internationalism to restore the balance between the Global North and Global South. [6] [7]

Adler was instrumental in Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez' visit to Latin America in August 2023 [8], which included meetings in the region’s three largest leftist-ruled democracies: Brazil, Chile and Colombia. [9] [10] In a statement to Foreign Policy, Adler said the trip was aimed at “fostering the bonds of trust that will be necessary for the hard work of hemispheric cooperation.” [11]

Adler blames Paul Volcker's chairmanship of the Federal Reserve in 1979 as the point in which we went "wrong". In an interview with Christopher Bollen for Interview Magazine he explained inflation has "severely misguided policymaking in the United States" citing it was the " Nixon shock put the final nail in the coffin of the Bretton Woods system and firmly established dollar supremacy in the global economy." [12]

Roles

Adler was instrumental in the foundation of the Progressive International in 2020 [13], where he now serves as the Co-General Coordinator with Varsha Gandikota-Nellutla [14]. Together Adler and Gandikota-Nellutla comprise two of ten of the Progressive International Cabinet, along with Fatima Diallo, Srećko Horvat, Rachmi Hertanti, Aruna Roy, Pierre Sané, Renata Ávila and Scott Ludlam. [15]

Previous to the Progressive International, Adler served on the foreign policy advisory team for US Senator Bernie Sanders and directed policy for Yanis Varoufakis and the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 (DiEM25), [16] [17] during which time he worked as coordinator for the Europe's Green New Deal movement.

Writing

Adler has written articles on topics including Climate change and Politics for the New York Times, The Guardian [18], and in Spanish for El Diario [19]. He co-published several articles with Yanis Varoufakis including: "The EU's green deal is a colossal exercise in Greenwashing" [20], "The European Spring holds the answer to the fragmenting EU’s plight" [21], and "We shouldn't rush to save the liberal order. We should remake it." [22] to which Adam Tooze wrote a response. [23]

Research and education

Adler's research has focused on housing provision for the Global South. He holds a PhD from University of Oxford [24] where, as a Rhodes Scholar at the New College [25], he examined the comparative political economy of property markets. [26] As a Fulbright Scholar at the Colegio de México in Mexico City, he developed an inclusive housing strategy for the Housing Commission of the Mexican Senate [27] and, at the Centre for Policy Research in New Delhi, he investigated the Delhi Development Authority and the role of bureaucracy in Slum redevelopment. Adler was also a policy fellow at the Institute for Global Change [28] in London.
