The Type 90 Pneumatic Torpedo (九〇式空気式魚雷, designated for
Imperial Japanese calendar year 2590), also known as the "8th Year Type" (十二年式) was a 610 mm (24 in)-diameter
torpedo of the
Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN), launched from surface ships. It was later used as the template to develop the more advanced
Type 93 oxygen torpedo.
The Japanese Navy initially used 533 mm (21.0 in)-diameter torpedoes like most other Navies during this period, making the Type 90 the first-ever 610 mm (24 in)-diameter torpedo put in service. It was initially deployed for the Mutsuki-class destroyers in a 2 triple closed launchers configuration (6 tubes total). It was then used as a 3 triple launchers configuration (9 tubes) on the following Fubuki-class destroyers (and subclasses), and used in a 2 triples launcher configuration (9 tubes) on the Hatsuharu-class destroyers. It was also deployed on some cruisers that would also deploy 610 mm (24 in)-diameter torpedo launchers.
A quadruple tube launcher was also developed for the Shiratsuyu-class destroyers, but all ships fitted with those launchers were now fitted with the newly developed Type 93 torpedo, which was also progressively replacing all Type 90 torpedoes, now obsolete.
It used a standard fuel-compressed air propulsion system and was pneumatically launched from the torpedo tubes. This system was notably improved with the following Type 93 oxygen torpedo.
The Type 90 weighed about 2,500 kg (5,500 lb) [2], with a high explosive warhead of about 400 kg (880 lb) [3] of TNT [4].
