Marilyn L. Murray (born 1936) is an internationally recognized authority and pioneer[ citation needed] in the field of trauma treatment. One of her foundational works, The Trauma Egg. [1], is widely implemented in therapeutic treatment models around the world.[ citation needed]
Murray was the co-founder of the first major art gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1968 [2]
In 1982, Murray entered the field of psychology. As a psychotherapist, she specialized in experiential intensive outpatient treatment starting in 1984. Murray published her first book, Prisoner of Another War [3], in 1991. She assisted Psychological Counseling Services, Scottsdale, AZ in starting their intensive outpatient program in 1993 [4]. In 1995, she met Mike Tyson following his release from prison [5]. Their working relationship spanned years and continents.
Starting in 1997, Murray created and taught a graduate program for Ottawa University for seven years in Phoenix, Arizona entitled The Treatment of Trauma, Abuse and Deprivation [6]. She also taught for University of the Nations in Hawaii, Ukraine, and the Netherlands, and now has had students from over forty countries.[ citation needed]
Murray lived and worked part-time in Moscow, Russia from 2002 to 2018 where she presented her method to health professionals and clergy who had long histories of trauma [7]. There are Murray Method International centers in Russia, Ukraine, Tajikistan, and Central Asia.[ citation needed] She also was a weekly columnist for The Moscow Times in 2012-2013 [8]
In 2012 The Murray Method [9] was published, detailing her entire model for moving beyond traumatic experiences to wholeness. In addition to the Trauma Egg, The Scindo Syndrome and The Circles of Intimacy, Responsibility and Impact are internationally recognized Murray Method instruments.[ citation needed]
Marilyn Murray was the 2022 Carnes Award winner. [10] presented by the Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health. This award is given annually to someone who has made outstanding contributions to the field of problematic sexual behavior [10]
