[2] [3] He was arrested on charges of "Propaganda against the regime" and "Photography of law enforcement and security officers" by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps during the Mahsa Amini protests on October 2022 and moved to Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad. Phelan had gone to Iran on a business trip as a travel consultant to open a tourist center. [7] [8] He was arrested on charges by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps during the Mahsa Amini protests on October 2022 and moved to Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad. [9] [10] [11] He was held on charges of "Propaganda against the regime" and "Photography of law enforcement and security officers" and then sentenced to 6 and a half years in prison. [12] [13] [14] On January 2023, he went on a hunger strike to protest his arrest. [15] [16]
The state IRNA news agency referred to Phelan as a "security criminal" who "provided and sent information" during the protests in Iran. [17] [18] [19]
