The Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security is responsible for Tennessee Highway Patrol, Homeland Security, and Tennessee Driver's licenses division, and integrated efforts to reduce the risk of terrorism and natural disasters to Tennessee's physical, cyber and communications infrastructure.
In 2007, Governor Phil Bredesen announced that the Office of Homeland Security would merge with the Department of Safety under Mitchell's leadership. [2]
