Charcas is a town and municipality in the Mexican state of San Luis Potosí in central Mexico. [1] The municipality covers an area of 4.911 km2. As of 2020, the municipality had a total population of 14,117 people. [2] Charcas is just south of the Tropic of Cancer. Due to its elevation of 2,219 metres (7,280 ft), the climate is mild.
The town was founded in 1578 by Spanish conquistadors.[ citation needed]
