Change Ind template names from appended "records" to appended "standings"
Stimpulated these aren't conferences, so that's likely the origin of appending the word "records" in this Cat, ala:
Template:189x college football independents records
Template:195x NCAA independents football records
Template:196x NCAA University Division independents football records
Template:198x Division I-A independents football records
Template:20xx Division I FBS independents football records
All the actual conference (ACC, BigTen, Pac-12, SEC) template names append with "standings". So Independents are different.
I see maintenance upside in creating consistency with conference templates. The only negligible downside is the word "standings" will then render on the team pages, such as seen in
2016 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team.
However, that changes doesn't introduce any meaningful issue, as many RS site already display the word "standings":
Agree with your proposal. I've always thought it was strange to have a "ranking" of independent teams when there isn't really anything that goes along with it. I don't think the RSs you list are an issue. They are just tables whose naming follows the coding of the conference standings. If the RSs were referring to independent schools "standings" in prose, then I would feel differently.
I don't understand your comment Notre Dame rendering the word "standings" though. I don't see anything weird on the page. —

Note, we now have stubs for all seasons except 1924-1949.
We currently and generally name these template in the "Template:YEAR CONTEXT football records" format, but there are some irregularities.
National Collegiate Athletic Association gives us "...at a follow-on meeting on December 28, 1905 in New York, 62 higher-education institutions became charter members of the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States (IAAUS).[1] The IAAUS was officially established on March 31, 1906, and took its present name, the NCAA, in 1910.[1]"
Therefore we could rename (ignoring "records" vs "standings" thread, above) as:
Template:1906 IAAUS independents football records
Template:1907 IAAUS independents football records
Template:1908 IAAUS independents football records
Template:1909 IAAUS independents football records
Template:1910 NCAA independents football records
Template:1911 NCAA independents football records
Template:1912 NCAA independents football records
Template:1913 NCAA independents football records
Template:1914 NCAA independents football records
Template:1915 NCAA independents football records
Template:1916 NCAA independents football records
Template:1917 NCAA independents football records
Template:1918 NCAA independents football records
Template:1919 NCAA independents football records
Template:1920 NCAA independents football records
Template:1921 NCAA independents football records
Template:1922 NCAA independents football records
Template:1923 NCAA independents football records
While 62 is many and possibly "all," I suppose we might later discover a few teams which weren't part of IAAUS/NCAA for a given season(s). Those teams can be addressed at that time either via a separate template or with a footer note in the above templates as necessary.
Next, the
1892 college football season appears to mark the first conference (
Western Interstate University Football Association). So 1891 and prior doesn't need an "independent" callout and can be left as-is ("Template:18xx college football records" format). But 1892-1905 could be renamed to conform with the rest of the Cat:
Template:1892 college independents football records
Template:1893 college independents football records
Template:1894 college independents football records
Template:1895 college independents football records
Template:1896 college independents football records
Template:1897 college independents football records
Template:1898 college independents football records
Template:1899 college independents football records
Template:1900 college independents football records
Template:1901 college independents football records
Template:1902 college independents football records
Template:1903 college independents football records
Template:1904 college independents football records
Template:1905 college independents football records
Have been renamed per above, with "NCAA" to follow. I suspect some teams not part of IAAUS/NCAA are currently included in these standings. Renaming might drive such discovery. Any fallout is easily resolved by creation of "190X college football independents records" for non-IAAUS/NCAA teams. There is a project-wide gap on quantifying IAAUS/NCAA membership. So this is an incremental step forward.
