In WWII, the WS designation for convoys appear to be derived from "Winston's Special" as the first convoy was organized on the explicit orders of the Prime Minister. [1]

WS convoys were routed from Scotland via the Cape of Good Hope [2] to Egypt and, later, India. This set a pattern of River Clyde (Scotland), Freetown (Sierra Leone), Cape Town / Durban (South Africa) and onwards. This was the normal route, but it was subject to inevitable alterations [1].
