The school was originally known as Oklahoma A&M, with the nickname of "Aggies".
In 1923, the modern nickname of "Cowboys" was first used, but for several decades "Cowboys" and "Aggies" were used interchangeably.
In 1957, the school adopted its modern name of Oklahoma State University, and permanently dropped the "Aggies" nickname. Women's sports, which first became prominent with the passage of
Title IX in the 1970s, have always used the nickname of "Cowgirls".
