Lifesaving primarily involves the rescue and resuscitation of casualties, specifically those in drowning situations. However, it is not restricted solely to these purposes as it also includes skills such as life support and first aid.

Within the UK, Lifesaving is run principally by the Royal Life Saving Society UK and has a number of awards associated with the skills taught. Most teaching is provided by volunteers and the individuals who tend to be involved with the program are generally teenagers. The Lifesaving programs especially coincide with the Duke of Edinburgh Award and many individuals start participating for this reason.
