This is a category of Continental Army staff officers, who were officers appointed to special roles not directly involved with leading men in combat, such as adjutants, paymasters, quartermasters, mustermasters, provosts, judge advocates, commissary officers, medical officers, chaplains, etc. Although Continental Army staff officers were usually commissioned officers with ranks such as major or colonel, some staff officers, particularly physicians and chaplains, were technically civilians.
