WARNING: Do not make decisions based solely on these raw numbers. They require careful interpretation, and should be used only as a guide for further exploration.
The software makes a separate count of the number of pages in each of the portal's lists of selected articles, but it does not know how many such lists there are on each page, and it cannot add the numbers. Where a portal has more than one list (e.g. Portal:Africa), the articles in each list will be counted separately and categorised separately. So a multi-list portal whose lists sizes fall into different groups will be placed in multiple categories ... but because each page appears only once in a category, a portal with several lists each in the same size group will have only category.
