Long Island, New York, is the largest island in the continental United States. Its proximity to New York City and favorable topography made it especially good for air flights. At the dawn of the aviation age, Long Island assumed a role as one of the, if not the, aviation capitals of the world. Charles Lindbergh took off on his famous non-stop flight to Europe from Roosevelt Field. Mitchel Air Force Base was once charged with coordinating the entire nation's air defense forces. Grumman, Republic Aviation and Curtiss, all called Long Island home. For these reasons, Long Island is known as the Cradle of Aviation.
