Calopogon barbatus, the bearded grass-pink, is a species of orchid native to the southeastern United States, from Louisiana to North Carolina. [1] [2] [3]
Description
Plants range from 11 to 34 cm tall when flowering and 13 to 57 cm tall when mature. Corms are typically round to elongated, with sizes ranging from 1.3 to 2.6 cm. Leaves are initially closely pressed against the inflorescence, with linear blades measuring 7 to 22 cm long and 0.2 to 0.55 cm wide, later extending to 12 to 54 cm long. Inflorescences start green or slightly purple at the base, sometimes entirely purple, then turn entirely green after flowering, measuring 11 to 34 cm initially and later extending to 13 to 57 cm. Floral bracts are 0.2 to 0.45 cm long. Flowers, numbering 1 to 12, are spaced less than 1 cm apart, opening almost simultaneously. They are colored magenta, pink, or occasionally white, and lack fragrance. The dorsal sepal is obovate to oblanceolate, 1.2 to 2.0 cm long and 0.4 to 0.9 mm wide, with an acuminate apex. Lateral sepals are distally reflexed to straight, ovate to moderately lanceolate, weakly falcate to straight, measuring 1.1 to 1.6 cm long and 0.5 to 0.9 cm wide, with an apiculate to acuminate apex. Petals are obpandurate, 1.1 to 1.6 cm long and 0.4 to 0.6 cm wide, with an obtuse apex. The lip is 0.7 to 1.35 cm long, with the dilated apex of the middle lobe triangular to quadrangular, broadly rounded, 0.7 to 1.1 cm wide, and with a retuse or apiculate apex. The column is 0.6 to 0.9 cm long and 0.15 to 0.2 cm wide, with the distal end measuring 0.5 to 0.8 cm wide, and a rostellum is present. Capsules are ovoid to ellipsoid, measuring 1.2 to 1.7 cm long and 0.45 to 0.6 cm wide. The chromosome count is 2n = 40 or 42. [4]
Distribution
Calopogon barbatus grow in wet, acidic, sandy pine savannas and grasslands across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina, USA, at elevations from sea level to 100 meters.
