Asad Osman Abdullahi Diano ( Somali: Asad Cismaan Cabdulaahi 'Diyaano', born 25 January 1983, Arabic: أسد عثمان عبد الله «ديانو») also known as Asad Diano, is a Somali politician, Major general, and former chief commander of the Puntland Security Force from 2010 to 2018. He was the runner-up presidential candidate in Puntland in 2019, defeated by Said Abdullahi Deni, and the founder of the Mideeye in 2020, which is the leading opposition party in Puntland. Asad Osman Abdullahi, also known as "Asad Diano," was born on 25 January 1983, in Geladin. He belongs to the Osman Mohamoud sub-clan of the Majeerteen within the Harti sub-clan. His father, Osman Abdullahi Diano, [3] was one of the founders of the Puntland Security Forces during Abdullahi Yusuf's tenure in 1998. [4]
Asad Diano served as the Director General of the Puntland Security Force for 14 years. During his tenure, he collaborated with the American government to address terrorism in the Horn of Africa. [5] His military rank of Brigadier General was conferred by former president Abdirahman Farole. [6] he also worked as a consultant to former president of Puntland, Abdiweli Gaas. [2] Diano ran for the presidency of the semi-autonomous state of Puntland in 2019, coming in as the runner-up. He was defeated by the president Said Abdullahi Deni, [7] with a vote count of 35 to 31, respectively. [8] In 2020, Diano co-founded the Puntland opposition party Mideeye, along with chairperson Abshir Omar Huruse. [9]
