The season was suspended by the league officials on March 12, 2020, after several other professional and collegiate sports organizations followed suit as a result of the ongoing
COVID-19 pandemic.[3][4] On May 26, the NHL regular season was officially declared over with the remaining games being cancelled.[5] The Coyotes advanced to the playoffs for the first time since the
2011–12 season and defeated the
Nashville Predators in the qualifying round for their first series win since 2012,[6] but were defeated in the first round by the
Colorado Avalanche in five games.[7]
Due to the pandemic, this was the Coyotes' final season in the
Pacific Division. The following season saw the Coyotes moved to the temporarily reformed
West Division. As per the league's previously agreed realignment, the team returned to the
Central Division in 2021 to make room for the expansion
Seattle Kraken. Due to suspending operations in 2024, this was the last season the Coyotes made the playoffs and won a playoff series.
