The 2001–02 New York Islanders season was the 30th season of the professional ice hockey team. This season saw the Islanders finish in second place in the Atlantic Division with a record of 42 wins, 28 losses, eight ties and four overtime losses for 96 points. They qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 1994 as the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference, but lost their first-round playoff series to the Toronto Maple Leafs in seven games.
Newly acquired forward Michael Peca was named team captain. [1]
The Islanders scored the most shorthanded goals during the regular season, with 17. [2]

Florida then traded its fourth-round pick in today's Draft (101st overall) and a 2002 third-round draft choice for the New York Islanders' 2001 third-round choice this season (64th overall).
The team also signed defenseman Marko Kiprusoff, Radek Martinek and Dick Tarnstrom to multiyear contracts.

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim -- Agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent defenseman Aris Brimanis, who had been with the New York Islanders, on a one-year contract.
NHL: Former Lightning center Steve Martins and goaltender Zac Bierk signed deals with the Senators and Coyotes, respectively.
The Flames announced the signing of free agent left wing Craig Berube.
Coates was waiting to hear if center Marquis Mathieu and defenseman Anders Myrvold were going to sign tryout offers.
Like Gagnon, versatile Anders Myrvold has been virtually a fill-in. He's another capable pro who signed a 25-game tryout with Hartford.
