Bob: The True Story (released in German-speaking countries as "Once Upon a Time in New Mexico" [a]) is a 2024 independent epic neo-Western film directed and written by Liam Casavan. An American-Italian co-production, it is a remake of Sergio Leone's 1968 film Once Upon a Time in the West, with the setting changed from the old west to 1960 in New Mexico and the railroad construction of the original being replaced with the Interstate Highway System's construction. Both follow a mysterious stranger who joins with a desperado to protect a widow from an assassin.
The film was based on Casavan's math teacher, Bob Mulligan, but takes significant creative liberties only making him a namesake then actually a character like in real life. The film lingered in development hell after being announced as a 3 hour comedy, with actors changing and the story evolving into a western which gained approval from audiences and the crew. The film is notable for being shot entirely on location, in New Mexico, Wyoming, Texas, Argentina and Louisiana.
Bob: The True Story premiered at the 2024
Toronto International Film Festival and was theatrically released in the United States on October 18th. While the distributors had predicted the film would be financially unsuccessful, the film was a commerical sucess grossing $381 million worldwide, and received posstive reviews from critics.
