For some reason there is no mention on Circassian genocide in this page. In my opinion there should be a lot of information about that for obvious reasons. Why was the flag changed? The Russian tricolour with the coat of arms was only used during WW1, and even then, most likely only by the Monarchy before being scrapped by the previsory government. The plain Russian tricolour was, from what I can see, officially adopted as the national flag during the reign of Nicholas II, but most believe that, despite not being the official flag, the tricolour was used since Peter I (the first Emperor)'s reign (1682/1721-1725). I just think that the plain, current flag of Russia, is a more accurate depiction of the national flag of the empire for most of its existence.
