Photos needed

The article has two pictures, but they're not great, and more would help illustrate the article. Some which are more scenic and which illustrate plants and structures in the garden. See also photo request for Lorillard Snuff Mill, a National Historic Landmark within the grounds. Photos and/or photo uploads are needed.

  • New photos would be helpful.

Photographers

Hi! I added a section listing historic photographers and the section was deleted by someone not logged in. I'm absolutely willing to discuss utility of this section, but as other important figures are listed earlier on in the page and as the person making the change isn't available to discuss this change, I'm reverting the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emjackson42 ( talkcontribs) 20:20, 9 May 2017 (UTC) reply

@ Emjackson42: For the first two the citations would need to be more than just a link to the card catalog (funny that we still call them that ... are there actual physical cards in drawers anymore?) entry for the relevant meeting minutes. No, we don't need an online link, but the page number(s) would be valuable. Daniel Case ( talk)
@ Daniel Case: Here is another link for the first one: https://www.nybg.org/library/finding_guide/archv/NLBritton_rg4f.html (what about that! actually online); here's a link for the second: https://www.nybg.org/library/finding_guide/archv/merrill_rg4f.html.
In answer to your other question, we do not still have cards in drawers! What we do have is something called a "vertical file" which is a bit of a hybrid archival collection. It has ephemera including institutional memos, records, things of that nature. Emjackson42 ( talk) 16:18, 7 September 2018 (UTC) reply
@ Daniel Case: Looks like a staff person went ahead and made the edits... Can you assist by adding the citations? Or can I do that? Thank you.
@ Emjackson42: I've done it. It only just occurred to me to look here at the articles about most of these people, and I see there are some third-party sources (like obits in the New York Times) which could establish this information as well. When I have the chance again I will look at them. Daniel Case ( talk) 22:07, 11 September 2018 (UTC) reply
@ Daniel Case: Fantastic! Thank you so much. Emjackson42 ( talk) 01:30, 12 September 2018 (UTC) reply
@ Emjackson42: I have finished doing this, and in the process did some work on the related articles (I had to trim a lot of Gregory Long's article; so much of it read like it was written by a publicist). Are there any pictures of the other directors? A lot of them are dead so it would be permissible under our fair-use guidelines (and speaking of which, can we get a free image of Ms. Barratt as well (i.e. one not previously published so any standard publicity photo won't do)?

This article as a whole also could do with a lot of work. Daniel Case ( talk) 16:29, 13 September 2018 (UTC) reply

@ Daniel Case: Thank you so much for working on this. I appreciate your making those edits and the others on the Long article. I think that the library here does have many images of the past directors that I can look into uploading to WM Commons. I will also find out about getting a portrait of Barratt. Yes, the article does indeed need a lot of work... I so wish I could do it! Working in the library here I have access to all of the important historical information. Ah, well. Thank you once again. I will look into the images. Emjackson42 ( talk) 15:39, 17 September 2018 (UTC) reply
@ Daniel Case: I will work to add images to Wikimedia Commons in the coming week or two. I don't have an image for Barratt yet, but I can provide the others. Emjackson42 ( talk) 19:51, 24 September 2018 (UTC) reply
@ Daniel Case: I added images for the past directors, but do not have an image of Barratt. I think that our PR staff may be working on an image for her. I also created an article for Howard S. Irwin because he didn't have one. Could you link to it from this article? Unfortunately I uploaded his portrait with the wrong file name - Harold S. Irwin - but have made a request that the file be renamed. Emjackson42 ( talk) 14:39, 26 September 2018 (UTC) reply

@ Emjackson42: Sorry about the delay in responding ... I've been busy with some other things, but now I have the time again.

I made the link per your request. I am not quite sure if that picture of him sufficiently meets the free-image policies at Commons, as it may be covered by full copyright based on your attribution information. But I'm not sweating it for now, and if it isn't above the Commons bar we can probably just get away with hosting it here under fair use ... I doubt at this point in his life he wants to pose for pictures, and I don't know how many more years he will be around. Daniel Case ( talk) 02:09, 6 October 2018 (UTC) reply

@ Daniel Case: Thank you! No worries--there was no rush. I've shared a couple of other portraits in this manner, with blessings from administration, but if there is a better way to do so in the future, I would be happy to follow it. Thank you for everything! Emjackson42 ( talk) 18:02, 8 October 2018 (UTC) reply
@ Emjackson42: You're welcome. Daniel Case ( talk) 18:15, 28 November 2018 (UTC) reply

Needs mention of The William and Lynda Steere Herbarium

Under the section "Grounds" it mentions the lab, conservatory, and library, but I really think the herbarium needs a specific section too (not just briefly in the preceding text). I would add this myself, but there's a conflict of interest -- AKW-ward ( talk) 19:22, 16 October 2018 (UTC) reply

I completely agree! Same for me... COI... There is so much literature to look at:
