Considering that Houston St is now more commonly considered to be the northern boundary of the LES, not just by realtors, but also by the local media, I think it should be noted that the 14th St/Broadway borders are, at beast, disputed, and the Houston/Bowery borders are more widely recognized. I realize that would require some heavy rewriting since much of the article covers areas above Houston Street, but right now, this article is more about East Village than about the current LES. Ytny

I've taken the liberty of removing the following, and creating a new section about borders, which includes info on current and historical borders:

"While the exact boundaries of the neighborhood are open to debate, it today refers to the area of Manhattan south of East 14th Street; north of Fulton Street and Franklin Street; east of Pearl Street and Broadway; and west of the East River." ^[1]

The problem with the above was that it directly contradicted information elsewhere in the article, and given that the encyclopedia cited was published in 1995, it seemed inappropriate to use as a source for today's boundaries.

Also, the following sources all list E. Houston St, not E. 14th St as the northern border:

• nycvisit.com ("New York City's official tourism website")
• New York Times
• New York magazine
• About.com

You can't re-write history. The boundaries have not changed. The concept of the East Village is too abstract. The encyclopedia citation is from 1995 and that's too out of date? The only reason I can think of people wanting to rename the area is because of the jealousy of people living in Greewich village and bigotry - they did not want to associated with the types of people living in the Lower East Side. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kmc212 ( talk • contribs) 01:19, 22 January 2008‎ (UTC) reply

On The Southern and Western Border Of The Neighborhood:

Hello, I'm new to Wikipedia so sorry if I'm doing this wrong. As a life long resident of the LES I found the boundaries chosen, specifically the map shown, quite bizarre and unfounded. The exclusion of a large portion of Henry Street and the LaGuardia NYCHA development from the neighborhood is truly a head scratcher. For example why would the Manny Cantor Center (Educational Alliance) be excluded from the Lower East Side? The only time I've seen this done was in this New York Times article from 2020 ( https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/23/realestate/the-lower-east-side-real-estate.html), but there's not a single other reputable source that uses that map, so why are we using it here? In addition to not including Henry Street and NYCHA housing its also weird to exclude Dime Square/ Hester Street as that has always been apart of the neighborhood. In my opinion the real borders should look quite similar to that shown on "The Market Line" logo ( https://www.marketline.nyc), a design that was looked over by a number of local community and development groups.

I'm not opposed to changing the borders, I'd just like to discuss and understand the reasoning for such a drastic change in the map (because no reason was provided) and would like to have them reverted to the original or more commonly recognized one in the meantime. It simply doesn't make sense to use the borders decided in a single NYT article and ignore the dozens of others sources that show a completely different border.

I hope I did this correctly and if I didn't I just ask that you reformat what I'm saying to be correct instead of just deleting it. Thanks.

I have replaced the current boundaries with ones from an authoritative source, the The Encyclopedia of New York City, but left in the information from The New York Times. Neighborhoods in New York City do not have any officially set boundaries, instead these must be determined by everyday usage as shown by evidence from reliable sources. Anyone wishing to adjust the boundaries presented must provide a reliable source to do so, one that is more authoritative than the Encyclopedia. With almost thirty separate topic entries, over 150 references, and some 101,078 bytes, this article seems to be getting a bit long. Isn't it about time to reverse the Corlears Hook 2010 redirect? That section has sufficient length and citations to be a stand alone article, which would free up both for further expansion w/o wearing anyone out trying to read them. -or not.
