Pre-Civil War this area was known as the Boonslick Democracy while towards and after it was known as Little Dixie. The area is located north of the MO river and is mostly flat (being on a Glaciated Plain). In this area there is a lot of Antebellum architecture and plantations. This architecture is different from the German architecture found in the Missouri Rhineland, the French influenced English architecture found east in the Lincoln Hills (Hannibal) and the architecture of St. Louis (South East), all of which is significantly different from the architecture found in the Ozarks!! Oddly enough Little Dixie sits north (and overlaps slightly west) of the MO Rhineland, settled by Germans, many who were abolitionist. The area, as most of MO, is the site for many bloody Civil War Battles. Also they have a different dialect from the surounding areas - Hannibal, St. Louis, and the MO Rhineland.

Anyhow... Little Dixie is more like a cultural/dialect area and not a geographic area... Geographically it is a Glacial Plain that was once a prairie.
